The Sixty-Second Flea Market Inspection
What to check on a vintage plane before you hand over money, in the order that finds the deal-breakers fastest. Written for standing in a field with one bar of signal.

You are holding a plane, there is someone behind you who also wants it, and the seller is watching. This is the order to check things in, worst-case first, so you find the deal-breakers before you waste time admiring the japanning.
0–10 seconds: cracks
Cracks are the only fault that makes a plane worthless, so they go first.
Hold it loosely by the tote and tap the casting with a fingernail. A sound casting rings. A cracked one gives a dead thud.
Then look, in whatever light you have, at:
- the mouth area, especially on a bevel-up plane
- both cheeks, low down
- the boss the tote screws into
- around the knob seat
A brazed or welded repair is usually visible as a colour change and always kills the value, however competent it is.
10–20 seconds: the sole
Sight along the sole with one eye, from the toe. You are looking for twist rather than wear — a sole worn hollow in the middle is fine, a sole that is wound like a propeller is an afternoon of flattening.
Then put a straight edge on it if you have one. The critical areas are the toe, the heel, and both sides of the mouth. Nothing else has to be flat.
20–30 seconds: the mouth
Look at the gap ahead of the iron. Has it been filed open? A filed mouth has a bright, irregular front edge instead of a crisp cast one, and it means the plane will never take a fine shaving without the frog pushed uncomfortably far forward.
On a block plane, check the mouth adjuster actually moves. Seized eccentric levers are common and are usually rust rather than damage, but you are buying an unknown.
30–40 seconds: is it all there?
Run through the parts that go missing:
- Bench plane: lever cap, chipbreaker screw, both frog screws, the lateral lever, the depth adjuster nut, the brass tote and knob screws.
- No. 78: the fence, its arm, the depth stop, the nicker.
- No. 45 or 55: both fence rods, sliding sections, the depth stop, cutters.
- No. 71: cutters, the depth stop, the closing shoe.
- No. 140: the removable side plate.
- No. 9: the hot-dog side handle.
A missing lever cap or fence turns a fair price into a bad one, because the missing part often costs more secondhand than the plane you are holding.
40–50 seconds: the iron
Pull it out. Measure by eye how much steel is left above the bevel. Under about an inch and a half and it is nearly finished.
Check for deep pitting at the cutting edge specifically. Pitting in the middle of an iron is cosmetic; pitting within a quarter inch of the edge means you will be grinding it back past the pits before it will take an edge, which costs you most of the remaining life.
Check the chipbreaker seats against the back of the iron with no gap.
50–60 seconds: date it, then decide
Lateral lever? BAILEY on the toe? Patent dates behind the frog? Low or tall knob? That is enough for a rough era, and the era tells you whether you are looking at a cheap user plane or something worth more than the seller thinks. The five-minute dating procedure is the long version of this.
What not to worry about
- Surface rust. An evening's work, and it comes off without touching the japanning.
- Missing japanning. Cosmetic on a user plane.
- A dull iron. Every plane you buy will need sharpening. Assume it.
- A dirty or scratched tote. Cleans up, or replaces cheaply.
- A wrong-era iron or knob. Matters for a collector, means nothing for a user, and is a good argument for a lower price either way.
The one rule
If it is cheap, common, and structurally sound, buy it. If it is expensive, or scarce, or you cannot check it properly, walk away — there will be another one. Nearly every regret in this hobby is a plane bought in a hurry in bad light.
