A type study is a reconstructed sequence of one maker's design changes, used to date a tool. No manufacturer published one; collectors built them from catalogues, patent dates and thousands of observed tools.

Why most makers have none
A type study takes decades of collector attention to assemble, and that attention has concentrated on the makers who sold the most. Stanley's is unusually fine-grained; most makers have nothing comparable, and for those the honest tools are the maker's own numbering scheme, catalogue appearances, and the marks on the tool. Where a study does not exist, this site says so rather than inventing precision.
