How to identify it

  • Bench-plane proportions but no frog and no depth adjuster - the blade is clamped between the body and a thick cap.
  • A thumbscrew at the top of the blade sets its pitch.
  • 3 inch wide blade.

Buying and using

Discontinued in 1943 and heavily reproduced since by Lie-Nielsen, Veritas and others, so check the casting marks before paying vintage prices. Genuine examples with an original blade are the ones that hold value.
