How to identify it

• 9 inch sole, 2 inch iron: Bailey No. 4 dimensions.
• The frog seats on a full machined surface, and on later flat-sided examples two screws at the back of the bed let you shift the frog with the iron still clamped.
• 'BED ROCK' cast into the toe.

Buying and using

The Bedrock's real advantage over a Bailey is that you can adjust the mouth without disturbing the setting. Whether that is worth three times the price of a No. 4 is a question people have been arguing about since 1898.
