How to identify it

  • Skeletal body with two fence rods and a sliding section, nickel plated, marked RECORD.
  • Cutters are stamped with their width and stored in a fitted box or roll.
  • Directly comparable to a Stanley 45 in function; the parts are not interchangeable.

Buying and using

Buy on completeness, as with any combination plane. A 405 with both rod pairs, the sliding section, the depth stop and a full cutter set is worth several times a bare body, and Record sets survive intact more often than Stanley ones.
